The Hub of High-Tech and BioTech

When it comes to information technology and the life sciences, Boston is in a league by itself. No wonder the fastest-growing segment of Boston’s record-breaking convention business is coming from the high-tech and bio-tech sectors. With its incomparable base of technology companies, universities (MIT, Harvard, Tufts, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the University of Massachusetts, and dozens of other leading-edge institutions), research facilities, and resident brainpower, Boston and the state of Massachusetts have long been on the cutting edge of new technology. For meeting planners representing high-tech and biotech events, it all means that Boston has a built-in attendee base and industry infrastructure like no other venue anywhere.
High-Flying High-Tech
According to the Cyberstates 2006 study, Massachusetts has the second highest consumer electronics manufacturing and third highest concentration of tech jobs nationwide. Technology companies contribute over $20 billion in payroll to the state economy. There are nearly a quarter of a million high tech workers in Massachusetts -- 233,200 to be exact. There are approximately 12,100 high-tech establishments in the state, and high-tech tech exports represent 39% of Massachusetts’ export. And to make sure the future looks just as bright, high-tech R&D expenditures in Massachusetts ranks in the top three among states nationwide. It’s one of the primary reasons why Boston is a leader in hosting events and meetings for top technology companies such as Microsoft, HP, SAP and dozens more.
Breakthrough Bio-Tech
Boston is at the center of the life sciences world. The Boston-Cambridge area is known worldwide as “bio-tech alley.” Today, Massachusetts features a biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and life sciences industry with more than 400 local and international companies and over 30,000 employees. This includes a host of global leaders such as Biogen Idec (the nation’s second biotech company to go public back in 1983) and Genzyme Corp., each of which has over $2 billion in revenues and thousands of Boston-area employees. Research institutes are operated by Novartis, Merck& Co., Schering-Plough Corp, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and many others. Then there are the hundreds of established and emerging companies trying to make their mark in one of the world’s high-risk, high-payoff industries. And industry experts say that Boston’s first quarter-century of biotech leadership and innovation is only the beginning of an historic success story. The area’s outstanding academic research in the biotech space, combined with major venture investment, will also keep fueling the growth. In fact, Bio International Convention, the world’s biggest biotech event, is coming to Boston and the BCEC this May with over 1700 companies and 20,000 attendees.
